East and Southern Africa (ESA)
The East and Southern Africa (ESA) region is home to some of the world's rapidly expanding
economies – and some of the most vulnerable communities due to frequent climate shocks and
conflicts. Challenges like shorter and less predictable growing seasons hinder the region's ability to
harness agriculture's full potential for sustained economic growth.
The CGIAR Regional Office for ESA, established in 2022, continues to leverage partnerships formed
within the region since the 1970s to improve food and nutrition security amid a climate crisis. This
office oversees the largest number of projects, Initiatives, and funding within the CGIAR portfolio,
spanning 19 countries from South Africa to Ethiopia.
Partnerships with regional and national organizations across the region continued to be a
fundamental component of our work in ESA in 2023.
“ Addressing food and nutrition security
amidst climate change in East and
Southern Africa means leveraging CGIAR’s
extensive network to ensure tangible
impacts on the ground.”
— Namukolo Covic, Regional Director, East and
Southern Africa.
