Defining the benchmark research sites (rural to urban transect) in Vietnam

Publication date: 17 | 10 | 2024

To foster in-depth research and practical applications, selecting benchmark sites from rural to urban areas not only reflects the diversity of food systems but also serves as a key to sustainable solutions.

The report titled "Defining the Benchmark Research Sites (Rural to Urban Transect) in Vietnam" under the Agriculture for Nutrition and Health (A4NH) program introduces an innovative approach to the interplay between agriculture, nutrition, and health.

The study focuses on three types of locations: urban, peri-urban, and rural, with selection criteria based on multi-stakeholder surveys and secondary data analysis. The prioritized sites identified include:

  • Urban areas: Thanh Xuan and Cau Giay districts in Hanoi, featuring diverse retail systems and rapid development.
  • Peri-urban areas: Dong Anh district (Hanoi) and Duy Tien district (Ha Nam), which are closely connected to urban centers and serve as key food production hubs.
  • Rural areas: Moc Chau and Mai Son districts in Son La province, offering significant agricultural potential while facing challenges in nutrition and poverty.

The research aims to establish detailed models at the district level, serving as a foundation for scaling up and applying solutions in neighboring areas.

In addition to site selection, the report highlights the most important criteria for each type of area, such as nutritional status, poverty levels, and rural-urban linkages. These serve as the basis for building sustainable development solutions in the future.

Conclusion:

Identifying benchmark research sites has opened opportunities for multi-stakeholder collaboration, promoting in-depth studies, and addressing the practical needs of communities. This research promises to contribute to sustainable development and improvements in nutrition and health for the people of Vietnam.

Conceptualizing sustainable diets in Vietnam: Minimum metrics and potential leverage points

17-10-2024

Like many countries, the Vietnamese government and international aid organizations in Vietnam have considerable interest in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, which are inextricably linked with sustainable diets. The authors grounded the development of our conceptual framework in a Vietnamese context from the outset of the study, while also drawing from the scientific literature to incorporate the breadth of knowledge and theory available on sustainable diets.

Child stunting is associated with child, maternal, and environmental factors in Vietnam

17-10-2024

Child stunting has immediate and long-term consequences including increased morbidity and mortality as well as detrimental impacts on child development and adult health, and it contributes to the intergenerational cycle of malnutrition, hindering economic development Therefore, the authors want to improve understanding of the determinants of child stunting in Vietnam nationally and among vulnerable subpopulations by assessing associations of hypothesized child-, maternal-, household- and environment-level determinants of stunting in children 6–59 months using nationally representative data from the 2015 Vietnam Nutrition Surveillance System.
