The National Action Plan for the transformation of transparent, accountable, and sustainable food systems in Viet Nam to 2030 (NAP-FS) was promulgated under Decision No. 300/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister dated March 28, 2023. The transformation of food systems (FS) needs to begin at the provincial level, with the participation and coordination of stakeholders from multiple local departments, agencies, and sectors, to support decision-making and promote effective transformation with clear direction. To achieve this goal, stakeholders need a clear understanding of the current status of the provincial food system and the role of each sector within it.
To promote implementation of the NAP-FS, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) proposed Dong Thap Province, in the Mekong Delta region, as a pioneer to participate in activities supporting implementation of the National Action Plan at the provincial level. In 2024, an inter-sectoral working group (NSG) was established, comprising representatives from agencies under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment such as the Institute of Strategy and Policy on Agriculture and Environment (ISPAE) and the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences (VAAS), as well as agencies under the Ministry of Health, including the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN). The working group also included experts from the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT). The group supported Dong Thap Province in synthesizing information on the current status of the food system and developing the Dong Thap Provincial Food Systems Profile.
